What happens when one football belongs in two different trophy cases?
On this edition of Big Seth’s Big Adventures, Seth Levit takes O.J. McDuffie back to October 17, 1999, when Dan Marino entered a game against the New England Patriots just seven yards shy of becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to reach 60,000 career passing yards.
Marino crossed the milestone on an eight-yard completion to Tony Martin—but the historic football stayed in play. A few snaps later, Patriots rookie Andy Katzenmoyer intercepted Marino and returned that very same ball 57 yards for his first NFL interception and a touchdown.
Now Seth had a problem: Dan Marino and the Pro Football Hall of Fame needed that football back.
Inspired by the recent Travis Hunter ball-boy controversy, Seth tells Juice the behind-the-scenes story of tracking down one of the most significant footballs of Marino’s legendary career—and somehow convincing the Patriots to give up a pretty significant piece of their own history.
